LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say they have extinguished a house fire in a central Las Cruces.

Firefighters responded at around 11:30 a.m. Friday after a resident discovered his attic was on fire.

Officials with the Las Cruces Fire Department say they were faced with heavy smoke but were able to contain the blaze within about 20 minutes.

The homeowner told authorities he had been using a torch for a roofing project and accidentally ignited insulation in his attic.

Officials say the attic sustained heavy fire damage while the remainder of the house had smoke and water damage.

One person was treated on the scene for minor injuries. No firefighters were injured.
