ABBEVILLE, La. (AP) - The Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office says a memorial support fund has been set up for donations to help the family of slain deputy Allen Bares (BAHR’-ehz).

Sheriff Mike Couvillon (KOO’-vee-ahn) said in a news release this week that donations can be made to the Allen M. Bares Memorial Fund at Gulf Coast Bank of Abbeville.

Bares, a 12-year law enforcement veteran, was killed June 23 when he encountered two men suspected of burglarizing a home near where Bares was cutting grass on his day off.

Two men were captured and face charges of first-degree murder in his death.
