RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Department of Health says it has confirmed more than 50 cases of whooping cough statewide this year and the majority of those have been in Lawrence County.

The Rapid City Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1vH0hVB ) that the state has so far confirmed 51 cases of pertussis, or whooping cough. Seventeen of those cases have come from Lawrence County.

Ziebach County has only had four confirmed cases. Pennington, Custer, Butte, and Shannon counties all only have three or fewer cases.

Three-quarters of the confirmed cases of whooping cough are from children younger than 15 years old. State Epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger says a quarter of those children were not vaccinated.

The Department of Health is urging those who still need to be vaccinated to contact local health providers.
