SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) - A woman will spend 45 days in jail for punching and kicking a German shepherd dog in a park where hundreds of people had gathered for a dog-walking fundraiser.

Schenectady City Court Judge Matthew Sypniewski told 40-year-old Dana Jarvis that she had exhibited “unacceptable community behavior.” He sentenced her Thursday to 45 days in jail and three years on probation, during which she can’t own pets.

Jarvis has been in jail since she was found guilty by a jury last month.

The prosecutor noted that the dog wasn’t injured, but said the attack was unnecessary and was upsetting to onlookers who were at Schenectady’s Central Park for the annual Fireplug 500 fundraiser.

Jarvis punched her boyfriend’s German shepherd twice and then kicked it in the shoulder after it fell to the ground last September.
