WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police troopers are going to be on the roads across the state over the weekend trying to keep people safe.

Operation Combined Accident Reduction Effort will provide additional traffic enforcement over the 4th of July weekend.

Patrols and safety checkpoints will be based on reviews of where fatal crashes have occurred in the state.

Lt. Garry Scott says police and others have made great strides in reducing traffic fatalities through enforcement, education, engineering safer roads and better medical care.

But Scott says there’s still more to do.

So far this year there have been 17 traffic fatalities.

Of those, five were suspected to be due to speeding; four driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and two victims were not wearing seat belts.
