AURORA, Colo. (AP) - Aurora officials say they want the community’s input when hiring the city’s next police chief.

Former chief Dan Oates has gone to Miami Beach to head that south Florida city’s police department. He joined the Aurora department in November 2005 and received high praise for his department’s quick response to the theater shootings in July 2012.

Now, officials say they want to replace Oates with someone who will build on a good relationship with Aurora’s diverse population.

Regan Williams, who is in charge of recruiting candidates for the job, tells The Denver Post (https://dpo.st/VrTdRK ) he plans to reach out to numerous parties in the city, including faith leaders, school leaders and those who work with the immigrant community.

Nearly 29 percent of the 340,000 people who live in Aurora are Latino and 16 percent are black.
