SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Investigators in Springfield are still trying to determine what caused an ATV accident earlier this week that injured two people.

Twenty-one-year-old Cody Ballard was driving the all-terrain vehicle on a bike trail on the city’s western edge when the accident took place.

According to Sangamon County Sheriff Neil Williamson, Ballard was in critical condition Saturday in the intensive care unit of Memorial Medical Center after undergoing surgery.

Also injured in the accident was 19-year-old Eileen Brown.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (https://bit.ly/1muUD9z ) that she was treated at Memorial and released.

The accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, but authorities were not contacted until 6:30 a.m. Friday when Brown knocked on the door of a nearby home.

Rescuers found Ballard trapped underneath the ATV.
