BERINO, N.M. (AP) - Authorities say a 24-year-old Berino woman has been arrested after she stabbed her younger sister during an altercation.

Officials with the Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office say the woman had been arguing Saturday morning with her 20-year-old sister when the confrontation escalated. Another relative told investigators the suspect was assaulting the victim.

When authorities arrived, they say they found the victim suffering from a stab wound to the abdomen. She was reported to be hospitalized in stable condition after surgery to remove her spleen and repair a kidney.

Deputies say the suspect fled the scene but was arrested a short time later. She is held on suspicion of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and tampering with evidence.
