NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - A Cleveland County deputy shot and killed a suspect who was trying to escape in the deputy’s patrol car.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Meghan McCormick says the shooting occurred about 8:45 a.m. Saturday in southwest Norman following a traffic stop.

McCormick says two deputies were on the scene with a police dog that indicated the presence of drugs in the suspect’s vehicle. McCormick says the passenger in the vehicle then fought with deputies before managing to get into the patrol car and try to strike the officers.

She says at least one deputy opened fire and struck the suspect - who later died at a Norman hospital.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested and both deputies are now on paid leave pending an investigation.

No names have been released.
