MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - A western Michigan submarine museum is honoring two World War II veterans from the state as well as other U.S. prisoners of war in Germany.

The free exhibit at Muskegon’s USS Silversides Submarine Museum opens Sunday afternoon. It’s the public kickoff of the European Theater Exhibit at the museum on the Muskegon Lake Channel near Lake Michigan.

The exhibit features the experiences of Joseph Beyrle and Robert Miller. Miller was a member of the Army Corps of Engineers and Beyrle was an 82nd Airborne paratrooper, and both were captured and sent to German prisoner of war camps.

Organizers say the exhibit also chronicles the lives of POWs and their efforts to survive.

The opening caps downtown Muskegon’s weeklong Here’s to the Heroes events.
