OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - Police say an Opelousas man has killed himself after killing his wife, leaving behind their nine children

The Advocate reports (https://bit.ly/1j4Oosg) Kerry J. Varis, 36, approached his 32-year-old wife Nancy before 10 p.m. Friday at a family gathering and shot her once in the head.

Witnesses say Varis walked away and shot himself in the head with the same .38-caliber revolver.

Varis died at the scene, while his wife died at a hospital.

Police say they answered a disturbance call involving the couple around 1:30 a.m. Friday. Nancy Varis asked her husband to leave her sister’s house, and officers say Kerry Varris left at their direction.

Family members say Nancy Varis wanted to end their marriage, but Kerry Varis didn’t.

The nine children range in age from 5 to 18.
