ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say an Asheville police officer trying to arrest a driver was dragged 100 feet down Interstate 240 after the man pinned her arm to the steering wheel and drove away.

Investigators say it is a miracle 40-year-old Senior Police Officer Ann Fowler was not seriously injured because she fell into the middle of the interstate and was able to dodge several oncoming cars.

Police said 31-year-old Celso Avila-Aguilar was pulled over around 12:10 a.m. Saturday after officers suspected he was driving while intoxicated. After dragging Fowler, investigators say Avila-Aguilar rammed another police car before stopping because his vehicle was too heavily damaged.

Avila-Aguilar faces eight charges including second-degree kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon on a government official. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
