MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Two tortoises are back in custody thanks to Mesa police officers who helped corral the reptiles after they had escaped from their owner’s home.

Police spokesman Sgt. Anthony Landato tells KPHO (https://bit.ly/1qLPV9f ) one of the city’s police officers came across the tortoises Sunday morning near 32nd Street and McKellips.

The two reptiles were found making their way south in the northbound lanes. A slow speed pursuit ensued.

The wrong-way tortoises were eventually contained by officers and put into the back seat of a patrol car.

Landato says officers learned the two African spurred thigh tortoises had escaped from their home nearby. The two were returned safely to their home.
