NORMAN, Okla. (AP) - Cleveland County authorities have identified a man shot and killed by a deputy as the man tried to take a deputy’s patrol car after a traffic stop in Norman.

Sheriff’s spokeswoman Meghan McCormick said Sunday that 27-year-old Nicholas Popplewell of Norman died at a hospital after being shot just before 9 a.m. Saturday.

McCormick says the shooting occurred following a traffic stop and after a police dog indicated the presence of drugs in the suspect’s vehicle. McCormick says Popplewell was a passenger in the vehicle who ran to the patrol car and began to drive away as a deputy tried to pull him from the car.

McCormick says another deputy opened fire and struck Popplewell.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested on drug charges and both deputies are on paid leave.
