MOUNTAIN HOME, Idaho (AP) - Authorities say an 8-year-old boy’s dad and his uncle have died after they jumped into Idaho’s Snake River to rescue him after he fell in.

Elmore County Sheriff Rick Layher said Monday that the three were fishing Sunday afternoon in southwest Idaho when the men went in after the boy and were swept away by the current.

He says a man who overheard the pleas for help also jumped into the river and was able to rescue the boy.

Layher says the father was identified as 37-year-old Jose Jorge Barroso-Alfaro and the uncle as 35-year-old Martin Barroso-Alfaro, both of Mountain Home.

Witnesses told deputies the men disappeared under the surface before anyone could reach them.

The sheriff’s department says divers pulled them from the water, but they were pronounced dead.
