BUTTE, Mont. (AP) - A 54-year-old Butte man faces animal cruelty charges after Butte-Silver Bow county officials found nearly 100 cats in his apartment last week.

Police arrested Douglas Dean Billman at his mother’s house on Saturday afternoon. He posted a $17,000 bond and was released. He faces seven felony counts of cruelty to animals.

Officials dressed in hazardous materials suits entered Billman’s apartment Thursday after neighbors complained about the odor.

Animal control officers say there were carcasses of dead cats and feces on the floor. Some of the cats were so ill they had to be euthanized. The remaining cats were taken to the animal shelter or local veterinary clinics.

Billman is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
