STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) - Authorities say a Portage County Jail inmate awaiting sentencing for murdering his neighbor apparently killed himself in his jail cell.

The sheriff’s office says 33-year-old Jose Luis Flores Aca was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell late Sunday. Attempts to revive Aca failed, and he was pronounced dead at the jail.

Aca pleaded guilty last month to first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree sexual assault. He was accused of strangling 36-year-old Jamie Koch, driving her body to Waupaca County and setting her car on fire last August.

Aca was scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 30. The sheriff’s office says he was housed by himself.

Sheriff John Charewicz tells Stevens Point Journal Media that Aca was not on suicide watch.

WSAW-TV reports Stevens Point police will investigate Aca’s death.
