LANCASTER, S.C. (AP) - An Iraq War veteran will spend 32 years in prison after admitting he slammed an 11-month-old girl’s head against the ground, killing her.

Prosecutors say 28-year-old Jeffery Bradley was watching his girlfriend’s daughter last September at her Chester County home when the girl was hurt so badly she needed CPR. She would die two days later.

Deputies say Bradley first told them the girl was shocked biting into a telephone cord.

Bradley pleaded guilty to homicide by child abuse on Monday. He said he suffered post-traumatic stress disorder after nearly a decade in the Army and a stint in the Iraq War, but that was no excuse.

The girl’s mother asked for the maximum life sentence at the hearing held at the Lancaster County courthouse.
