CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - An infant’s body was found buried in the George Washington National Forest in Hardy County over the weekend, and the child’s parents were being held in jail Monday.

Troopers went to the site near Wardensville on Saturday and found the infant’s remains after the parents were arrested in Morgantown on unrelated charges. Interviews by investigators in Morgantown revealed that the couple, 32-year-old Joseph A. Christy and 26-year-old Summer L. McDaniel, had buried the infant in the national forest, state police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous said Monday in a news release

Baylous said no charges have been filed in connection with the infant’s death. The body was sent to the state medical examiner to determine a cause and time of death.

A Morgantown police officer attempted to stop a vehicle driven by Christy earlier Saturday because it had a stolen license plate. The vehicle fled and was pursued by police from several agencies. The chase ended when a Monongalia County Sheriff’s Department vehicle got in front of the vehicle, the Morgantown Police Department said in a news release.

Four children were in the vehicle during the chase. None of the children was wearing a seatbelt or using a child seat, Morgantown police said.

Christy, who is wanted for escape in Colorado Springs, Colo., was charged with being a fugitive from justice and four counts of child neglect. McDaniel also was charged with four counts of child neglect.

Christy and McDaniel were being held Monday at the North Central Regional Jail on $60,000 bond each. Jail records did not indicate whether they have attorneys.

Baylous said McDaniel is from Maryville, Missouri, while Christy has several reported addresses, including Colorado Springs.
