PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A 24-year-old North Providence has been arrested in a hit-and-run accident involving a Providence police officer.

Police say 24-year-old Timothy Stewart struck Officer Meguel Mena Torres at about 2 a.m. Sunday as the officer was running across Fountain Street to respond to a disturbance.

Police say Stewart was stopped a short distance away after a brief search and taken into custody.

He was charged with failure to stop at an accident resulting in injury and driving with a suspended license.

Torres suffered minor injuries. He was treated and released from Rhode Island Hospital.
