MATTITUCK, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities on eastern Long Island say a man died in a single-engine crash in Long Island Sound.

Southold Town Police say the crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. Monday about 7 miles north of the Mattituck Inlet. That is between Long Island and the southern coast of Connecticut.

The pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft. Authorities did not immediately identify him. His remains were taken to the Suffolk County medical examiner’s office.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the plane is believed to have been fixed-wing single engine aircraft called a Raven.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The area is about 85 miles east of Manhattan.
