GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - A Colorado state senator running for Mesa County sheriff says he won’t drop his candidacy while he faces allegations that he falsified a timecard at the department he’s hoping to lead.

Republican Sen. Steve King told The Denver Post Monday (https://goo.gl/l3Iblb ) he will remain in the race.

The Mesa County Sheriff’s office, where King had been working on a part-time basis, fired him last month over allegations that he lied on his timecard and for insubordination after being confronted about it.

The Arapahoe County District Attorney’s office is investigating the matter because the sheriff who fired King, Stan Hilkey, now heads the Colorado Department of Public Safety.

King told the Post that he looks forward to resolving the matter and helping in any way he can.
