NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A giant American flag stolen from the side of a Newport nightspot has been returned, along with a note of apology and some cash.

Jim Quinn, who operates the Newport Blues Cafe, tells the Newport Daily News (https://bit.ly/JV2etp ) that the two-story, 100-pound flag that went missing Wednesday night, was left Sunday in a rubber bin behind the building.

Quinn says the thief also left $100 and a note saying the money was to cover “renting” the flag for four days.

He says the person who took the flag Wednesday night wrote that he had been under the influence of alcohol at the time and felt very sorry about what he had done.

Quinn says he does not plan to press any charges.
