WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) - A 53-year-old Woonsocket man suffered a serious leg injury when a firework exploded next to him in the parking lot of a multi-family home.

Police tell the Woonsocket Call (https://bit.ly/VScoVk ) that Bruce Vanasse was apparently setting off illegal mortar-type fireworks at about 10:30 p.m. on Saturday from the lot on Greene Street when one blew up prematurely.

Police Lt. John Picard says Woonsocket fire crews were responding to a call nearby and witnessed the explosion. He says they quickly were able to get Vanasse’s massive bleeding under control.

He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital in serious condition.

No arrests have been made. Police say they recovered several unexploded fireworks at the scene and were trying to determine where Vanasse had obtained them.
