OZARK, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say an Alabama want wanted on rape charges was wounded in a shootout with deputies chasing him in a field.

The Dothan Eagle reports (https://bit.ly/VVQBwb ) 50-year-old Billy Wayne Lomaneck was taken to Dale Medical Center in Ozark after sheriff’s deputies apprehended him in Dale County late Monday. Sheriff Wally Olson said Lomaneck’s injuries were not life threatening.

Authorities had been searching for Lomaneck since last week when investigators obtained felony warrants charging him with first-degree rape. The suspect was spotted Monday night running in a field as a police dog chased him. The sheriff said pursuing deputies shot Lomaneck after he fired at them. No deputies were injured, but the sheriff said a police dog was killed.

It was not immediately known if Lomaneck had an attorney.
