YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) - Authorities have announced an alliance to promote better public safety and law enforcement cooperation in eastern Washtenaw County.

Organizers held a news conference Tuesday to unveil the Eastern Washtenaw Safety Alliance. It includes Eastern Michigan University, the county, Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township.

Organizers say a centerpiece of the effort is increasing in police patrols in and near the university campus and in downtown Ypsilanti.

In a statement, organizers say the project is “a collaboration that taps into the resources of area police agencies, governments and organizations to expand crime-fighting efforts in a variety of crucial ways.”

Participating law agencies include Eastern Michigan and Ypsilanti police and the sheriff’s department, which patrols Ypsilanti Township. The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority also is taking part.
