FARGO, N.D. (AP) - A phone notification system to alert residents in the Fargo area about emergencies and other events is going local.

The so-called CodeRED calls will now have North Dakota’s 701 area code, rather than the previous 866 and 855 prefixes. The system has separate emergency, non-emergency and weather numbers.

Officials say the previous numbers caused some residents to ignore the calls. Some residents believed the calls were from telemarketers.

Fargo Fire Chief Steve Dirksen says the change is to help ensure residents are “getting the facts they need to make informed decisions.”
