RADFORD, Va. (AP) - Funeral services will be held Friday in Radford for U.S. District Judge James Turk.

Turk died Sunday at his home in Radford. He was 91.

De Vilbiss Funeral Home office manager Alex Davis says the funeral is set for 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Radford.

Turk was appointed to the U.S. District Court’s Western District of Virginia by President Richard Nixon in 1972. He became a senior judge in 2002.

Turk never retired, continuing to work on cases throughout his final years.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine says in a statement that Turk was an example of what all judges should aspire to be - diligent, intelligent, compassionate, professional and decisive.

Turk served in the Virginia Senate from 1959 to 1972.
