MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - The Grand Strand has gotten a Big Break.

The Golf Channel’s series latest chapter was filmed at several courses in Myrtle Beach last month. The show will premiere October 7th, pitting six men and six women against each other for the right to win, among other prizes, an exemption into a PGA Tour or LPGA Tour event in 2015.

The group competed over three courses at Barefoot Resort, one each designed by Pete Dye, Tom Fazio and Davis Love III. An episode was also filmed at Pawley’s Plantation, a Jack Nicklaus-designed course that is south of Myrtle Beach.

This is the first time since the series premiered in 2003 that it took place in South Carolina, which has a reputation as a leading golf resort destination.

“It seemed like it was well past time to get there,” said Jay Kossoff, Golf Channel vice president of original productions and Big Break executive producer.

Kossoff said usually the series is held at a resort area or country club that is set apart from a large tourist area. This time, he said competitors and those working on the series enjoyed being in the thick of Grand Strand’s bustling beach resort.

Kossoff said with filming complete, work will begin on editing the footage for broadcast. He’s confident the Grand Strand’s nature will show through.

“It gave us the opportunity to make the show look different every single day,” he said. “It was a really unique opportunity and really a lot of fun.”

Golf Channel worked with Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday to bring the series to the Palmetto State. The tourist organization says the area has had a strong golf season already with the 20th anniversary of the “Monday After the Masters” event hosted by Hootie and the Blowfish and the recently concluded PGA Professional National Champion that was played last month at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.

Kossoff said of all the great vistas and locales, the thing that stood out was the impeccable, friendly treatment they received during their stay. “Maybe it was that Southern hospitality,” he said. “From the time we arrived to the time we left, it was a really pleasant experience.”
