NEDERLAND, Texas (AP) - A Southeast Texas man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty in the shooting death of his mother.

The Beaumont Enterprise (https://bit.ly/1rLRWSZ ) reports that 27-year-old Joseph Garrett Arredondo pleaded guilty Monday to capital murder in the fatal shooting of his mother. Fifty-five-year-old Hollie Ann Arredondo was shot six times in her Nederland apartment in April 2013.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they found Joseph Arredondo outside, carrying a .40-caliber handgun.

Court records show Joseph Arredondo had multiple convictions for violent offenses, including robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2004 and assault causing bodily injury in 2005.

Arredondo must serve at least half of his 40-year sentence before being eligible for parole.
