MONROE, Mich. (AP) - Mercy Memorial Hospital System in Monroe says it’s talking with Toledo, Ohio-based ProMedica about becoming part of the nonprofit health care company.

Mercy Memorial said Tuesday that its board approved the decided to sign “a letter of intent to join ProMedica.”

The southeastern Michigan hospital operator says that begins a process of negotiations that could take several months.

Mercy Memorial operates Mercy Memorial Hospital as well as Macomb Pharmacy, the Hospice of Monroe, HomeCare Connection, Home Respiratory Care and the Nursing Center. It also has outpatient rehabilitation, outreach labs and primary and specialty physician offices.

ProMedica has 12 hospitals, about 300 health care facilities, about 15,000 employees and about 1,900 doctors.
