CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - New Hampshire public health officials have confirmed the state’s first human case of a mosquito-borne virus that’s been rapidly spreading through the Caribbean and parts of Latin America.

Chikungunya is a virus that causes fever and joint pain. It rarely results in death but the symptoms can be debilitating.

The Department of Health and Human Services says the two people recently traveled to the Caribbean, where the mosquitoes have been found, and that there is no concern for local transmission because the types of mosquitoes that carry the virus have not been found here.

Public Health Director Dr. Jose Montero urges those traveling to areas where the virus exists to take precautions to avoid being bitten.
