RENO, Nev. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Dean Heller is calling for the resignation of the director of the Veterans Affairs regional office in Reno.

The Nevada Republican issued a statement Tuesday saying Ed Russell should either step down or the Veterans Affairs Department should take immediate steps to remove him.

Heller says the Reno office has consistently rated as one of the nation’s worst-performing regional offices, and a new report from the VA inspector general concludes the problems stem from poor management.

Russell didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Reno regional office is responsible for processing benefits claims for veterans living across Nevada.

According to an audit released Monday by the Veterans Affairs Department, thousands of patients in Nevada’s two VA medical systems waited 30 days or more for care.
