WEST COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - The Office on Aging in the South Carolina Lieutenant Governor’s Office is hosting an Elder Abuse Awareness Day Conference.
The free event on Wednesday in West Columbia includes discussions of such things as abuse and exploitation of the elderly, adult protective services, frauds and scams aimed at the elderly and low-cost legal services.
The conference at the Brookland Baptist Church Conference Center is free and co-sponsored by AARP, the South Carolina Bar, the South Carolina Adult Protection Coordination Council and various state and local government agencies.
It’s estimated that 10 percent of older Americans are the targets of abuse.
Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed worldwide on June 15.
