DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Officials say initial reports show engine failure may have caused a small plane crash that killed a flight instructor and student who’d just taken off from Daytona Beach International Airport.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://bit.ly/1n5iitm ) reports recordings revealed that the instructor’s transmission was cutoff in mid-sentence Monday night as she was telling air traffic controllers she was turning back toward the airport.

The Cessna 172S crashed into flames shortly after taking off from Runway 7 around 10 p.m.

The newspaper reports the plane was manufactured this year and its certification was issued just three days before the crash.
