ATLANTA (AP) - Gov. Nathan Deal has announced the formation of a group expected to help improve student achievement in the arts.

Deal said in a statement Wednesday that the Arts Learning Task Force will provide recommendations to state officials on implementing arts education in K-12 classrooms. The group is also expected to examine existing arts education initiatives in Georgia and elsewhere.

Deal says the overall goal of the task force is to help Georgia schools produce students who are culturally literate and able to think creatively.

The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s Georgia Council of the Arts will administer the task force. The 16-member group is composed of education professionals and consultants from throughout the state.
