NEWBURGH, N.Y. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney says a new measure he sponsored in Congress will help keep dams safe.

The Hudson Valley Democrat says the Dam Safety Act was signed into law Tuesday as part of a broader measure. Maloney says the Dam Safety Act will provide communities with support to keep dam safety standards high.

Maloney said there are more than 800 dams in the Hudson Valley and that nearly 100 of them are so-called high hazard dams whose failure would pose a serious risk to the economy and to communities.
