WARSAW, Ind. (AP) - Police say a 22-year-old man was badly injured when he was hit by an SUV while walking on a northern Indiana county road in the pre-dawn darkness.

The Kosciusko (kahs-ee-AHS’-koh) County Sheriff’s Department says Michael Keener of Warsaw was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in critical condition after the crash about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday near Warsaw.

The department says the driver told deputies he didn’t see Keener until the last moment because of the dark clothes he was wearing. The driver said he tried to swerve but still hit Keener. The SUV went off the road and hit a utility pole, but the driver wasn’t hurt.
