AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - An autopsy has been ordered on a man who died shortly after he was chased and then detained by Amarillo police.

Lt. Erick Bohannon says paramedics were called early Wednesday after the unidentified man was put in the back of a patrol car following a short foot chase. Bohannon says the man died while paramedics were tending to him.

Police twice pursued the man in a car after officers spotted him acting suspiciously. The pursuits were called off for safety reasons but officers later spotted the man on foot, chased and captured him.

Potter County Justice of the Peace Gary Jackson ordered the autopsy.
