WILLIAMSON, W.Va. (AP) - The new Circuit Judge in Mingo County began her work in the dark.

Miki Thompson was sworn in Wednesday morning despite the fact there was no power in the courthouse. Senior Status Judge John Cummings delivered the oath of office.

Thompson said she stood beside a window in a jury room during the ceremony. She’ll have a public swearing-in ceremony on July 10.

Cummings has been handling the circuit court docket with Senior Status Justice Thomas McHugh since Aug. 16, 2013, when former Judge Michael Thornsbury was indicted. They continued their work after Thornsbury resigned and pleaded guilty to federal charges. Thornsbury pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge related to a scheme to protect the late Sheriff Eugene Crum from accusations of illegal drug use.
