COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Supreme Court has ordered the Coventry Board of Canvassers to hold a special election to fill a Town Council seat.

Residents asked the court to intervene after the board did not call for a special election to fill the District 5 council seat. The seat has been vacant since February.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/UuewBX) the court found that the town solicitor mistakenly relied on a misprint in the Town Charter when he advised the town that a special election was not required and the council should appoint someone. The council could not agree on an appointment.

The date of the election has not yet been set.
