SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police are looking for a man and woman who impersonated police officers to make off with a man’s wallet and car in Salt Lake City.

Police say the couple approached the man as he was leaving a market late Monday night and told him they were officers.

They patted him down, had him turn over his wallet and cellphone and then asked to search his car for drugs.

Once inside, the suspects drove away in the man’s 1999 green Honda Accord (with Utah license plate Y95 4WD).

The suspects were described as whites in their 30s.

Police told the Deseret News the cultural background of the Hispanic victim may have been a factor. They say police in Mexico are feared and often do not wear uniforms.
