HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Gubernatorial nominee Tom Wolf said Wednesday he has endorsed a former opponent, Katie McGinty, to become the next chairwoman of the state Democratic Party.
Wolf, who also endorsed state Rep. Jake Wheatley, of Allegheny County, as vice chairman, disclosed his choices in an email to Democratic State Committee members, who are scheduled to choose the next party chair at their June 21 meeting in Camp Hill.
Wolf is challenging Republican Gov. Tom Corbett’s bid for re-election.
“As I look toward the fall, I know that I need a battle-tested team in place to take on Tom Corbett, build the party, and elect Democrats up and down the ballot,” Wolf said in his email.
McGinty, a former secretary of the state Department of Environmental Protection and a former environmental adviser to Bill Clinton’s White House, placed fourth in a four-way race in the May 20 primary.
McGinty, who lives in the Philadelphia suburb of Wayne, said she was “honored to be asked and excited to serve.”
The current chairman, Jim Burn, did not return telephone messages seeking comment Wednesday.
