COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s new state budget allows some money from motel room taxes to be used for more law enforcement during the Atlantic Beach Bikefest and other events in the Myrtle Beach area next May.

Gov. Nikki Haley on Thursday let stand the budget provision sought by Grand Strand lawmakers. They wanted to be able to use accommodations taxes for more law officers after a rash of violence during Bikefest on Memorial Day weekend left three dead and seven wounded.

Bed tax money generally can only be used for tourism promotion.

Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce CEO Brad Dean says using some of the money for additional law enforcement is the best investment for the community and its visitors.
