ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a 20-year-old Chilton County man drowned in Orange Beach.

Beach safety director Melvin Shepard of Orange Beach tells AL.com (https://bit.ly/1pLRKzR ) the man was with two friends near a sand barge in water about 5 to 7 feet deep around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday Shepard says the man became distressed. His friends tried unsuccessfully to rescue him.

Surf and Rescue and Fire Department swimmers weren’t able to locate the body. A firefighter in a helicopter spotted the man floating about 100 yards out and 300 yards down from where he had last been seen.

The name of the man was not immediately released.

The drowning came a day after officials lifted swimming restrictions put in place over the weekend when an unusual number of sharks were spotted near Alabama Point.
