LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Police in Las Cruces have arrested a man accused of attacking an elderly couple with a hammer a day after being released from jail.

The Las Cruces Sun-News reports (https://bit.ly/1s8wqsB ) 42-year-old Guy Jaime Young faces multiple counts including attempted murder and aggravated burglary and robbery.

Police say Young approached an 82-year-old man Wednesday morning and hit him over the head with the hammer.

Young then allegedly entered the home and struck the man’s 79-year-old wife on the head.

He then fled in their car but was located by police 90 minutes later.

The couple was hospitalized but the husband’s injuries may be life-threatening.

Investigators say Young was released Tuesday by Dona Ana County Sheriff’s deputies after being booked for possession of a controlled substance.
