RAMAPO, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say they’re investigating the death of a 20-year-old New Jersey man who apparently drowned while swimming in a lake at New York’s Harriman State Park.

State park police tell the Times Herald-Record of Middletown (https://bit.ly/1kQDjtH ) that the man was swimming across Pine Meadow Lake in the Rockland County town of Ramapo on Tuesday evening when he went under. A friend told emergency responders that the man suffered a cramp shortly before he disappeared.

The man’s name hasn’t been released.

Police say swimming is prohibited in the lake and no lifeguards are assigned there.

Harriman State Park straddles the Orange-Rockland county line near the New Jersey border 40 miles north of New York City. It’s the second-largest park in the New York state parks system.
