ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - New Mexico’s Democratic congressional delegation is pushing for a new federal facility to bridge the gap between applied research and product development.

U.S. Sens. Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich and U.S. Reps. Steve Pearce, Ben Ray Luj├ín and Michelle Lujan Grisham Wednesday wrote Defense Chuck Secretary Chuck Hagel underlining their strong support for the department’s initiative to create a network of manufacturing innovation institutes across the country.

They also asked that the next institute be focused on optics and photonics technologies, which are used in robotics, medical imaging, next-generation displays, defense, biometric security and many other fields.

In March, the delegation and members of public private partnerships indicated that New Mexico’s extensive expertise makes it a natural location for additional national investment in research and manufacturing of optics and photonics technologies
