NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - State Police have taken over an investigation involving an assault complaint by a Newport city councilman.

The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1mdLP2g ) reports police were called to Councilman Michael Farely’s home on Monday afternoon.

He told them a contractor working at a neighbor’s home had taken two ladders from his property and assaulted him when he confronted him about the theft.

The contractor, 41-year-old Kevin Schiavone, says he took the ladders by mistake, thinking they belonged at the home at which he was working. He says he apologized to Farley and returned the ladders.

Newport police say they have turned over the investigation to state police to avoid the appearance of any favoritism because the case involves a city official. No charges have been filed.
