NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - A northern New Jersey doctor convicted of receiving cash kickbacks for diagnostic testing referrals has been sentenced to 21 months in prison.

Federal prosecutors say 43-year-old Maryam Jafari was sentenced Thursday in federal court in Newark. She was convicted in February following a three-week trial on a conspiracy count and two counts of violating the federal health care anti-kickback statute.

Jafari’s internal medicine practice was based in Newark. Prosecutors say she solicited and received cash kickbacks from a diagnostic facility in Orange from 2010 through December 2011.

Prosecutors say she got the money in exchange for MRIs and CAT scans she referred to the diagnostic testing facility.
